Retired paediatric neuropsychologist Peter Griffiths will give a talk, with illustrations, on Foetal Alcohol Syndrome.
Despite every bottle of beer, wine or spirits carrying a warning about the dangers of alcohol consumption in pregnancy, around 6,000 babies with Foetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS) are born in the UK every year.
The physical characteristics of these children are well known, as are their intellectual deficits, making for easy and early diagnosis.
Extensive brain damage is the norm in severe cases. Many mothers are alcohol dependent and unable to parent, and most affected children end up in foster care or adoption.
Foetal Alcohol Syndrome is entirely preventable, but persists, notwithstanding widespread health education.
