'The Matter of a Hat': Clothing and Conflict in Colonial Africa

Wednesday 23 March - 2:30pm
John McCracken will give this talk in Cottrell 2X4/6. He writes: This topic grows in part from the book I have recently completed, Voices from the Chilembwe Rising.

Time and again, Malawian witnesses giving evidence to the Commission of Inquiry into the Rising, insisted that one of their greatest grievances was the way in which white settlers abused them if they wore smart European clothes in Blantyre, particularly hats. This has led me to read more widely on the social significance of clothing and the importance of hats as indicators of social identity.
If you would like to attend this talk, please tell John Izod by Sunday 20 March at k.j.izod@stir.ac.uk. Please also let him know if you want tea / coffee and biscuits at the usual price of £2.50.
