WHAT LIES BENEATH: decoding advertising

Wednesday 14 January - 2:30pm
SURSA Workshop in Pathfoot C2 Steve Chinn and John Izod set the scene for the afternoon … Some people regard advertising as a cultural pollutant, creating in the service of corporate capitalism desires that can never be satisfied. They believe it is the modern opiate of the masses. Others admire its creativity, and enjoy it more than, for example, the TV programmes in which it is embedded.

Few doubt that advertising is a strong cultural currency – a formative influence in the social world we inhabit. Academics often see in advertising layers of meaning that its producers didn’t know were there.

In this workshop, John and Steve examine the shared and unshared ground between the ‘strategy’ (the thinking that goes into making advertising) and the ‘semiotics’ (the understandings that come out of watching advertising). Steve will be the voice of the former, and John of the latter. It will be hands-on, so they look forward to having you participate.

There will be no charge for attending the talk, but tea, coffee and biscuits will cost £2.50 per person. Please be sure to let John know by FRIDAY 9TH JANUARY if you want refreshments, and he will book them for you: k.j.izod@stir.ac.uk
