Thursday 2 May - 9:00am
Water of Leith from Balerno to Slateford Visitor Centre. 5.25 miles: 2-2.5 hours.

Starting Point: 1045 am at Water of Leith walkway entrance a few yards from the Lothian bus stop at Balerno High School. Transport: Train to Haymarket from Dunblane at 0901, Bridge of Allan 0904, Stirling 0908 due Haymarket 0953.

No 44 Bus from Haymarket to Balerno at 1004 or 1016. (service roughly every 12 minutes). Journey time c. 35 minutes.

This is a pleasant ramble that follows the track of the old railway, criss-crossing the river and offering a combination of open and wooded aspects.  The route passes close to the historic village of Currie, beside Spylaw Park and through Colinton tunnel before connecting with the Union canal towpath for the short remaining stretch to Slateford. It is on metalled paths and tracks throughout and suitable walking shoes will suffice. The going is mostly level with only gentle inclines, no steep ascents or descents, but care is necessary crossing the aqueduct at Slateford and on the steps down to the Visitor centre at street level.

Toilet facilities and light snacks (crisps, biscuits, cake) are available at the Centre, but they no longer offer soup and sandwiches. Provided visitors purchase a soft drink, tea, coffee etc. there is no problem with bringing your own packed lunch.

Return options: (i) No. 44 bus back to Haymarket station

(ii) on foot along the canal towpath to Lochrin basin, Fountainbridge (2 miles) and then c 12-15 minutes walk to Haymarket.

Dunblane trains at 1457, 1509, 1539, 1608.

Please let Bill know if you plan to join the walk, and don’t forget railcards/bus passes!  postmaster@eileenandbill.plus.com      07810 800367
