Walk around Culross

Friday 24 October - 10:30am
Mike Snell will lead this walk, starting at Culross WEST car park. It will be a short walk (around 2 hours) starting with a stroll alongside the coast from the west side of Culross to east.

We'll climb Newgate Wynd to the top of the town in order to examine the remains of the Abbey, founded in 1217 by Malcolm, Earl of Fife.Leaving the abbey, we'll follow a footpath through fields (providing great views of the estuary) until we reach 'West Kirk' - fascinating ruins of the former parish church of Culross.  From the Kirk we can continue westwards passing the site of the battle of Culross (between the Scots and the Danes) and a plague grave. There are several different pathways leading back to the coast - we can make a decision on the day which one to take. All will lead us back to the west side of town, a short walk from the car park from which we began. At this point we can choose to have lunch or coffee at one of several eating places in the town. Anyone wishing to stretch their legs further could explore the town, the Palace or perhaps follow the walk around Preston Island. The latter is an easy flat path extending out into the estuary at the end of which can be found the interesting remains of 18th century coal mines and salt pans. This extension would take around an extra hour and a half from the west car park.
