Dollar to Muckhart Mill

Thursday 26 March - 10:30am
Please meet in Dollar, parking alongside Dollar burn on the south side of the main road. Travelling eastwards along the A91 turn right immediately after the bridge (just before the Clydesdale Bank). There are usually plenty of parking spaces along this short stretch of road. Contact: Mike Snell 01259 760360, mobile 07972 574758, email mikejsnell@gmail.com As usual, please contact Mike directly to let him know if you are intending to come as he will then know to look out for you.

This is a relatively easy circular walk (nearly 7 miles) along rights of way, quiet roads and farmland. The first part of the walk is along the route of old Alloa to Kinross railway with good views of the Ochils to the north. Later we walk along a historic ‘sunken path' hollowed out from the adjacent farmland by busy 18th and 19th century 'traffic'. The walk passes by Muckhart Mill, the earliest records of which date back to 1560. Believed to have one of Scotland's largest ‘overshot’ waterwheels, the mill is now in private ownership and has been restored. ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Muckhart#Muckhart_Mill)
The path continues on to the village of Muckhart where we start our return using a different route through pleasant farm land and ‘set-aside’ fields back to Dollar.
Notes
These paths can be very muddy especially after rain so waterproof footwear is recommended.
Should refreshment be required there are several possibilities in Dollar such as the Café Des Fleurs (which some will remember as a coffee stop for an earlier SURSA walk) or the newly opened and highly recommended Bridge Street Kitchen serving tapas style food.
